In this GRAMMAR lesson we will discuss what are prepositions and how to use them correctly. We will also study a list of most common prepositions used in conversations.
What are Prepositions?
It is a word used before a noun or pronoun to relate it to the other words. When you form a phrase with the preposition it is called a prepositional phrase. This consists of a preposition and its object.
For example:
My English books are in my house.
“in my house” is the prepositional phrase. In is the preposition and house is the object of the prepositional phrase.
Why are prepositions and prepositional phrases important?
It is important mainly because they indicate a relationship between the object of the prepositional phrase with the rest of the sentence
In these examples, we see how the object of the prepositional phrase “table” is related with the rest of the sentence
The notebook is on the table.
The notebook is under the table.
The book is beside the table.
She held the notebook over the table.
WHEN WE USE PREPOSITIONS AND PREPOSITIONAL PHRASES WE JOIN IDEAS AND RELATE THE NOUNS WITH THE REST OF THE SENTENCE. THIS MEANS THAT OUR SENTENCES ARE CLEARER BECAUSE WE GIVE MORE INFORMATION.
